About Medical Care Japan

Bridging the Gap Between Two Systems

Welcome to Medical Care Japan. If you’ve ever stood in a Japanese pharmacy staring at rows of kanji-covered boxes, or wondered why your Japanese doctor just prescribed you five different tiny packets of powder for a cold, you’re in the right place.

Navigating healthcare in a foreign country is daunting. When that country is Japan—with its unique insurance “points” system, specialist-led clinics, and distinct cultural approach to medicine—it can feel overwhelming for Americans used to the PPO/HMO model back home.

Our Mission

Our goal is simple: To provide clear, actionable, and culturally translated medical information for Americans living in or traveling to Japan. We believe that language shouldn’t be a barrier to high-quality care. Whether you are a digital nomad, an English teacher, a corporate expat, or a tourist, we want to give you the confidence to walk into a Japanese clinic and get exactly what you need.

Who is Behind This?

I am an American freelancer living in splitting my time between the United States and Japan. Like many of you, my first encounter with the Japanese medical system was a mix of confusion and “sticker shock” (the good kind!). After some time of navigating everything from routine dental cleanings to knee injuries to cancer screenings, I realized there was a need for a resource that explains how things work—not just where to go.

As a freelancer, I do not get health insurance through work. Rather than consulting a primary care physician for all my healthcare concerns during a once-a-year visit, I research health screenings and procedures on my own and have am very cost-aware as insurance often doesn’t cover them.

If you’d like to contact me, please feel free to reach out to me on X.

Note: I am not a doctor. I am an advocate and a researcher sharing my personal experiences and gathered data to help you navigate the system. Always consult with a licensed medical professional for health advice.
